  1. It is with great sadness that we report the death on Tuesday 14 December 2021 of William Brockie, who served in 1 RS from 1971 to 1978. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. It is anticipated that the funeral will take place in Edinburgh on 29 or 30 Dec. Details of date, time and location will be promulgated when known.

  2. The Museum

We were preparing to open the museum earlier this month, it had taken a lot longer than expected due to our antiquated Air Exchange Heating System taking longer to fix than expected, problems with the boilers & system pressure, once this was complete we then had to get the heating system specialists (Optimum) in to make the Air Exchange Covid compliant by adjusting all the vents, after all this was done we started a deep clean before the grand reopening, it was during this deep clean that we found an issue with the floor around showcase one, the HES architect came to have a look at it, and authorised an investigation of the floor, HES works team came to have a look, the floor was rotten and unsafe under foot, the idea was to cut a hole at the back of the display to investigate, as they were about to cut the hole, they noticed the Lino had asbestos in it, they stopped, and have requested an asbestos specialist come and look at it before any investigation starts.

Apologies for the long reply, i have attached pictures of the area, I know you know the museum very well.

As a matter of interest Bill, I have not received any telephone calls or Emails from old or young Royals asking for access to the Museum during our closure, we have however had families in to see family medals etc, which is very doable adhering to COVID procedures, Facemasks, Social Distancing, Alcohol Gel etc…

    Kind Regards & Best Wishes

    Tom

    1. Tom,

Thank you for the update. Very much appreciated Posting regular updates on both the Guestbook and Museum areas of the Regimental website would I am sure be very helpful for any ex member of the Regiment planning to visit.

Presumably details of dates etc the Museum is closed, for whatever reason, can be published on the relevant section of the Edinburgh Castle website?

      Many thanks Tom.

Kind Regards and Best Wishes over the Festive Season.

      Bill

  3. Condolences to the family of Wati Cunningham who sadly passed away suddenly on 27 Nov. RIP

  4. REGIMENTAL GATHERING

There is still time for our Regimental Family to book in to attend the St Andrew’s Day Gathering at the Club at 1800 on Tuesday 30th November,

either in person or virtually on ZOOM. Please pass names and contact details to david.jack@theroyalscots.co.uk and mfglgibson@yahoo.co.uk

    Our late Regimental elder Statesman, Lieutenant General Sir Robert Richardson, said in his message on 28th March 2006;

“Treasure the past, draw strength from it, but do not live in it. The old days are gone, never to return. Embrace the future”.

    Team RS373 29th November 2021

    1. I attended the St Andrew’s day function and was very much impressed by the extremely warm reception from all the Old Royals in attendance. I was treated exceedingly well by everyone and made to feel so welcome. No one asked questions about my appearance, although I suspect many of those present would have liked to know more about the New Me. I would have answered any questions truthfully and with candour

I am proud to say that I’m an Old Royal too!

I now look forwards to attending further functions next year.

      Kind Regards
      Willma (Dolly) Gray

  5. ROYAL SCOTS CLUB – MEMBERSHIP

The Regimental Trustees have with The Royal Scots Club agreed for a trial period to have a Royal Scot soldiers membership with the reduced fee of £50. If we get enough members then we can have some nights in the club with a tacit agreement that there may be a free curry and a members bar.

The requirement to receive this is you must also be a member of the Association. If you are reading this then you already have an interest in the Regiment, this club will be the enduring memory of The Royal Scots so lets support it.

  6. Great news that Andy Kay will double the RS strength at Chelsea when he takes up residence as an In Pensioner in January. With Danny Dempsey already there Andy will be in good company.
    Jimmy

    1. Congratulations Andy. You will be amongst a great band of people and keep Danny on the straight and narrow.

  7. FURTHER COMMUNICATION ON REGIMENTAL GATHERING ST ANDREW’S DAY.
    Tuesday 30th November 2021

Given the details of Future Soldier that are now known the Gathering has very significant poignancy in The Royal Scots overall unique heritage.

WE can be proud that The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) will carry forward The Royal Scots Royal title, continue to be Right of the Line and have the motto Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.

Further details of the Gathering are:

1800 Gather at the bar and the lounge area in The Royal Scots Club. A piper will be playing Regimental tunes
1815 Brief, relatively informal Reflection at the RS Memorial in the Club; the piper will play through the lounge area and into the hall, close to the Memorial. Bob Bruce (last commanding officer of 1RS, and first commanding officer of 1SCOTS will say a few words. This will be both Zoomed live, and captured on film as a record of this milestone in our Regiment’s story
1845 Toasts, proposed in the lounge area, which again will be Zoomed live and recorded
1900 Haggis, neeps and tatties supper provided in the Library area
    2000 Gathering finishes
Informal photographs will capture the atmosphere, and be shared on internal communication channels including the RS website.

Coverage of the Gathering will be captured on a 5minute film, which will be shared on internal communication channels including the RS website. This will be added to Team RS373’s overall virtual story of The Royal Scots.

Team RS373 very much looks forward to the Gathering which is intended to bring those who served Sovereign and Country as Royal Scots, and their families, together to exchange memories and to wish all the best to and strongly support The Royal Regiment of Scotland as it moves forward.

Please do let us: david.jack@theroyalscots.co.uk and mfglgibson@yahoo.co.uk know as soon as is possible if you are able to attend, either in person or virtually. We do need to let the Club, our rallying point, who are being extremely supportive of the Gathering, know numbers.

  8. UPDATED COMMUNICATION FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THE REGIMENTAL FAMILY

An Informal St Andrew’s Day Gathering for The Royal Scots Regimental Family

At short notice Team RS373 has organised an informal Gathering for the Regimental Family at our rallying point, The Royal Scots Club, on Tuesday 30th November, St Andrew’s Day, from 6pm to 8pm.
The Gathering will be centred on the Main Bar area, with the opportunity to mix in adjoining areas. Whilst the bar will be a cash bar, arrangements have been made to provide a traditional haggis, neeps and tatties supper in the Library Area.

Around 6.45pm there will be some toasts, including to our patron saint St Andrew.
The event will be covered by ZOOM to enable the event to reach out to Royals and their families worldwide. Further details to enable joining ZOOM will be passed to those who wish to take part, albeit virtually.
To allow final arrangements to be made may I ask, please, that those wishing to take part now let David Jack, our Regimental Secretary (david.jack@theroyalscots.co.uk) and myself (mfglgibson@yahoo.co.uk) know the following:

    1. Names of those intending to attend the Gathering.
    2. Whether the attendance will be in person or via ZOOM.
    3. Confirm email and phone contact details for further communications.
    4. That they are happy for the use of their data, to arrange the smooth running of the Gathering.

Finally, please do spread the word; here is an opportunity to get together, and to encourage others to come and enjoy some comradeship.
Once a Royal, Always a Royal!

  9. You may be aware that the Ministry of Defence has been conducting an Integrated Review. We do not have any details at present, but an announcement is expected in Parliament on Thursday 25 Nov. This will be an oral statement in the House of Commons at approximately 1100. It is likely that this will be broadcast on the BBC Parliament channel.

We expect this to include mention of: 1SCOTS redesignating as 1RANGERS, part of the new RANGER Regiment and Army Special Operations Brigade, effects on other SCOTS Battalions, an update on basing and changes for the rest of the Army and Defence.

We do not have sight of the detail of any of this. Further communications from CGS, The Colonel of The Regiment, The Royal Regiment of Scotland and Brigadier George Lowder will follow.

  15. CHRISTMAS CARDS – WARNING NOTICE Please note that we have decided (as for previous years) not to send out Christmas Cards this year – the main factor being the extortionate cost for postage. As an alternative, it is our intention to give a cash donation to GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND. I do hope that this does not offend anyone. Bill and Lyn Sutherland.

  16. Mick, please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family at this the saddest of times.
