  1. RS MUSEUM OUTREACH – WHAT NEXT?

    Dear All,

RECAP. First of all, many thanks once again to all PPBG Volunteers for making Gretna 110 – and the previous exhibitions – such a success. Don’t underestimate how much the visitors enjoyed and benefited from meeting you – and the benefit to the Regiment’s enduring legacy from seeing Old Royals around the Regimental area.

WHAT NEXT? The 80th anniversary of VJ Day approaches and plans are well advanced for a research based, no exhibits event in the Edinburgh Central Library on George VI Bridge, 1000-1630 daily Tuesday 12 – Friday 15 August 2025.

    – Cathy is leading the charge on an RS Research Room, supported by our usual research partners from previous exhibitions, e.g. National Records Scotland, Scottish Genealogy Society, Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

    – Although there will be no items on display from the RS Museum, full use will be made of selected pull-up banners. We have accumulated sufficient banners and boards over the past three exhibitions to “pick and mix” in support of future exhibitions and events. For this event, banners will include 2 RS in Hong Kong and Lisbon Maru and 1 RS in the Arakan, at Kohima and in Burma.

    – It has always been the intention to do such in aid of enduring legacy, maximising the “bang for a buck” of previous investment and to make use of the longevity of banners and boards.

    – Such Research Room activities have proven “multiple wins”. Visitors learn about their relatives’ service and the RS Museum learns previously unknown detail in return; the RS Museum is seen by members of the Regimental Family and by museum and historical bodies to be active and to be taken seriously. They also aid re-accreditation and open opportunities for fund raising.

    NOW FOR THE ASK!

    – Ideally, we would like to have 2 x PPBG Volunteers each day. One in the entrance foyer to point to the Research Room and the other in the area of the Research Room to ensure that no-one escapes visiting it. Also to have a visible RS presence. I will be on parade at least one day, but not Friday 15th August when the RS Golf Club will be hacking divots out of the fairways at Uphall.

    – At the end of each day there might be opportunity for convenient and convivial refreshment in the Jolly Judge off the Lawnmarket; Deacon Brodie’s is likely to be thrang fu’ of tourists.

    – If any of you are available to do a day, a couple of days or even a part day, please let me know at early convenience.

FINALLY. If anyone receiving this thinks I’ve omitted names from the distribution list anyone who might be interested, please forward this. Furthermore, new PPBG Volunteers will always be welcome.

    Up The Royals!

    Jim
