  1. MUSEUM OUTREACH GRETNA 111 EXHIBITION AT DALMENY STREET 18-23 MAY 2026: MESSAGE TO PONTIUS PILATE’S BODYGUARD VOLUNTEERS

For wider information, herewith copy of the message to all who stepped forward to support the RS Museum Outreach exhibition in the Dalmeny Street Drill Hall marking the 111th Anniversary of the Gretna Rail Disaster.

Resounding success was achieved in promoting the Enduring Legacy of our Regiment in general and the 7th (Leith) Battalion in particular, and also of encouraging attendance at the annual Remembrance Service at Rosebank.

Evidence of success lies in that a significant majority of visitors to the exhibition had connections with 7 RS, Gretna and Gallipoli; indeed some had travelled some distance to visit. On the first morning alone, visitors included a lady whose grandfather had survived the crash and had gone on to Gallipoli where he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, an Old Royal of the Werl era whose great uncle died in the crash, and one of the Hibs historians who was much involved in preparations for last year’s Gretna 110 exhibition. Several of those who attended at Rosebank and came back to Dalmeny Street afterwards were of the opinion that the Gretna 111 exhibition had encouraged strong attendance at the service.

Having now delivered two Gretna exhibitions at Dalmeny Street, last year on large scale and this year on smaller scale, there would seem to be merit in repeating the latter annually. The information boards and pull up banners were procured with longevity and reuse in mind. Colonel Edward Cowan’s now completed diorama of Larbert Station has been gifted to the Out Of The Blue Drill Hall to join the Tree Of Life on permanent display there as a further reminder of RS Enduring Legacy. The Out Of The Blue team make us very welcome.

On the weekdays, the Gretna 111 exhibition succeeded without the level of PPBG Volunteer supervision previously deployed for full scale exhibitions, even though there was some PPBG presence daily right from the outset. Naturally, the strong PPBG turnout on the Friday and Saturday added hugely to the visitor experience for which all are congratulated.

Some quotes from the Visitors Book at the pop- up exhibition at Dalmeny Street:
“Great to see the sacrifice of the brave men who died is being remembered.”
“My grandfather never signed up as he had a job as a joiner. He lost a lot of good comrades who perished in the Disaster. Unfortunately he ended up making coffins for his comrades.”
“Never Forget and never forget those who can’t forget.”
Many thanks to everyone for their teamwork in planning, assembling and running the very successful exhibition.
