It was great to see the history and recognize the people narrating throughout the movie.
I served in the Regiment from Dec 1970 thru Nov 1978, discharging out of Oxford Barracks in Muenster.
Ending up where I started in Charlie company, under Major Chris Brown.
Throughout my career in the “Royals”, I made a lot of friends who even today I’m still in contact with.
My Regiment built the foundation stone of my future life and gave me the confidence to aim higher and go further in my life.
Thank you all from the bottom of my heart, for what you made and gave me through my military career!

I am part of the team running the UK’s Covid-19 leading mental health research study, which provides weekly data direct to the UK government and NHS.
We have +80,000 UK adults in our study, but we need a lot more as the data are being used to understand the effects of the virus and social distancing measures on mental health and loneliness in the UK and to make decisions on government response to Covid-19.
Like many of us, your members will be grappling with the many challenges that have arisen; we want to ensure that all voices are heard.
We’re approaching organisations across the UK to ask them if they can send the message below to any suitable newsletters/bulletins/social media/website pages? A number already have, but we want to make sure that the views of people living in all areas and in all circumstances are represented.

TAKE PART IN COVID-19 RESEARCH
University College London is running a study into the psychological and social effects of Covid-19 in the UK.
The results are being used to understand the effects of the virus and social distancing measures on mental health and loneliness in the UK and to inform government advice and decisions.
We’re looking for adults in UK who are happy to take part and spread the word about the study. Participation involves answering a 10-minute online survey now and then answering a shorter follow-up survey once a week whilst social isolation measures are in place.

FAQs
What happens to the data?
The data people provide are analysed anonymously (so people can’t be identified) and provided into weekly dashboards for cabinet office, wider departments of government (including DHSC and DfE), Public Health England, NHS England, and mental health organisations and charities. The reports are also made publicly available for members of the public to see what is happening, very much promoting ‘open science’ during the pandemic so that people are informed about how the nation is being affected: http://www.marchnetwork.org/research. The data are then being used to inform what advice is given to people, and what support is available, whether that is formal mental health service support or other support such as from telephone lines (such as Samaritans) and voluntary organisations. The data are also being used to inform decisions such as the length of lockdown. These are all decisions that directly affect individuals’ daily lives, so taking part can give individuals a chance to say what challenges they are facing.
Is the study ethics approved and GDPR compliant?
This study has full ethical and data protection approved and is GDPR compliant, all hosted through secure servers and data safe havens. It’s funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Nuffield Foundation (two of the largest scientific funders on medicine and society respectively).
Just to remind everyone that we have permission for only the Padre a wreath layer (now Tam Douglas) and one other to attend Rosebank Cemetery on Sat 23rd May to commemorate the Gretna disaster. If you wish to pay your respects then please spend 2 minutes in quiet reflection at 11 am when the wreath will be being laid.

BBC2 is re-screening the Quintinshill programme (with Neil Oliver) at 21.00 on Wednesday 20 May to mark the 105th anniversary. This documentary was made in 1915 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the disaster.
Well worth a watch.
Over the past couple of years I’ve been tracing my family history via ancestry.co.uk
My whole family has been interested in my findings, not least myself.
Its made a few family held documents surface with some useful historical facts.
One particular document in my mum’s possession was what I think is the boarding document for one of the troop ships heading back home from Burma that my grandfather was aboard.
The embarkation authority is labelled Rangoon.
On the document are 2 other servicemen, one of which was of the 1st Royal Scots, named Sgt H Wood. 3060755
Sadly my grandfather past away 20 years ago but would be great if any visitors had any information on Sgt H Wood who was possibly living in Goole West Yorkshire prior to the War.

The Executive Committee met 5th May using MS Teams to conduct business. This had been proceeded by a finance committee meeting. The Regimental Trust Meeting Scheduled for 29 may will also be conducted by this means.
George Simpson’s 100th birthday was a great success and attracted national media coverage and most of you will have watched it on BBC or STV. You can read George’s amazing story on the website under “latest news”. I sent a card to George on behalf of The Regimental Family. We will post a copy of the card on the website.
The Chairman of the Regimental Trustees wrote to the Princess Royal’s Office earlier this week and his letter which is shown below acts as a suitable update for all of us.
Today of course we celebrate VE Day, not in the manner we hoped but still with great pride in our nation and we remember the sacrifice made by so many who gave their all for us. The detail of the day’s events can be found on the guest book.
Gretna Memorial. Normally we would be parading on Saturday 23rd May at Rosebank Cemetery for a memorial service in honour of all those who died in the train crash at Quintishill on 22nd May 1915 when 214 members of the 7th Bn lost their lives. Because of the Covid19 restrictions this is obviously cancelled. However, we have received permission to allow our Association Padre The Rev Iain May to accompany Andy Kay as he lays a wreath on behalf of the Regimental Family.
Benevolence. On behalf of the Regimental Trustees I would like to thank all of you who have recently made donations to Royal Scots Benevolence either by a standing order or a one-off donation. Very many thanks.

Dear Commander Sullivan,
In these trying times I thought that it might be helpful if we provided a short update for HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of The Royal Scots Association. We can confirm that The Royal Scots Regimental Family continue to go about our business, albeit with most of this conducted in the ether. As you would expect, we have adapted and are getting on with it in the new normal.
The Regimental Office Staff are working from home and continue business online. The Executive and Regimental Trustees have held their meetings as planned, using MS Teams as their principal means of communicating.
The Museum and The Royal Scots Club are closed, but essential maintenance and checks are being conducted. Attendance at the Gretna commemoration at Rosebank Cemetery this year will consist of The Association Padre and a wreath layer conforming to the rules of social distancing.
Unfortunately, we will not be sending a large contingent to Le Paradis this year, as planned, to mark the 80th anniversary of The 1st Battalion’s action there to help defend Dunkirk. This will be carried forward to 2021.
With the cancellation of VE Day celebrations on Friday 8 May. The Royal Scots have been encouraged to observe 2 minutes silence at 11 am wherever they are.
Tomorrow, a former Royal Scot POW, George Simpson will celebrate his 100th birthday. A piper will play outside his house and a small number of Association Members suitably spaced will salute him. This will be covered by BFBS and we hope the BBC.

Sadly I’v been asked to post the Death of Kenneth Leader (Kenny) who passed away this morning with a suspect Heart Attack in Spain.
Kenny was a Drummer in the Royal Scots Regimental Pipes and Drums.
Kenny’s Funeral will take place in Spain where he will be cremated..
so sorry to hear about the passing of Kenny Leader, I worked with Kenny as a Regimental Policeman at Fort George for a few years, Kenny was always keen to try out parachuting hence him becoming a great member of The Golden Lions Freefall Team, also an excellent drummer. Rest In Peace Mate.

INTRO
Its nearly 5 weeks now since I sat at my desk in the Regimental Office, however I am in regular contact with the Chairman and Executive and routine business is still being conducted.
It is heart-breaking to hear each day the increasing numbers of covid-19 deaths. On a positive note it is heartening to see the support shown for not only the NHS but all those others who continue to do their duty, the lorry drivers, shop workers, the bin men etc and of course the armed services. I don’t have all deployment details, however just some examples are: at Manchester Airport troops have been trained by Boots pharmacists to help test NHS staff for Covid-19. Similar programmes have also been running at Edgbaston and Glasgow where 2 SCOTS are taking the lead. On the Isle of Wight the Scots Guards are assisting with the building of a temporary hospital.
What an inspiration Capt Tom Moore is, 99 years old and raising millions for the NHS and now he has a number one in the music charts.
As the battle to provide adequate PPE for those at the front line continues, I couldn’t help but think “back in the day the wives club would have had this sorted”

After the success of our September 2019 launch of the film “Scottish Soldiers – World War 2 Memories”, which features 4 Royal Scots veterans and captures their wartime experiences and their families’ contribution, a project is well underway to record the experiences of the Regimental Family whilst serving in the Battalions, be it those who wore The Royal Scots capbadge or their families including children and grandchildren. It was originally planned for 12 interviews but has been increased to 15.The Launch on Fri 1 May will further heighten awareness of The Royal Scots as Team 373, Maj David Dickson, Mr Iain Laird and Maj Ian Johnstone prepare to exploit the Lockdown impact on planned VE 75th commemorative events to “Tell the Untold Le Paradis Story”, commencing on 7th May- George Simpson’s 100th birthday- through the period 10- 27 May ( 80 years on from the pivotal role of 1RS in enabling the evacuation from Dunkirk).
Between producing the films and creating the WWI Roll of Honour and then the WW2 roll of Honour (both on the website) http://www.theroyalscots.co.uk/ Team 373 have been extremely busy.

Not everybody watches ‘The Antiques Roadshow’ at 20.00 on BBC 1 on a Sunday evening but If you had been watching on Easter Sunday you would have seen the grandson of Captain Reynolds seeking a valuation from Mark Smith, the resident militaria expert, on his Grandfather’s miniatures.
The story of his winning the VC was told and it was. mentioned that the original is in our Museum. A value of £3,500-£4.000 was put on the miniatures and ‘a quarter of a million’ on the original!
You can catch up on the interview on BBC iPlayer, Antiques Roadshow Series 42 Compton Verney 2 beginning at the 38.30 minutes point – and before you ask you will be glad to hear that, just by chance, the Museum Committee, led by Lt Col Gordon Rae, considerably reinforced the VC Display Rotunda last year!
Club. The Club of course remains closed, but the premises are constantly monitored by Adrian Hayes and his staff who are looking forward to reopening and getting back to normal.
Association. On 7th May Tom Logan and piper Billy Rutherford (2 metres apart) will stand in the street to congratulate association member George Simpson on the occasion of his 100th birthday. VE Day. As all events for the 8th May are cancelled let’s all hold a virtual 2 Minutes silence to honour all those who made the ultimate silence.
We cannot hold our annual parade and service at Rosebank Cemetery on the 23rd May to commemorate the Quintinshill disaster however a Regimental wreath will be laid there.

Plans are now starting for this year’s Cenotaph parade and the annual Service of Remembrance which this year is to be held on Sunday 8th November on the basis that by November we will have returned to normal. Please, therefore, may I ask you at this early stage to indicate whether you intend to assemble this year to march with the regimental contingent. Benevolence
The number of cases we are dealing with remains constant, however I believe that there will be an increase after lockdown. I base this on the assumption that many people are going to be financially hit and cases requiring tradesmen are able to restart. I would like to emphasis however that cases can still be submitted.
To fund cases, we rely heavily on the income from the Trust’s investments and those along with all investments have taken a hit during this period. We are going to have to rely on other sources of income, by that I mean an increase in donations and fund raising. There are a number of former Royals who make modest regular donations and it would be marvellous if more were to do the same. The big charities will be going all out to raise funds from the public, but I would ask that if you are able to please remember Royal Scots Benevolence. You might consider donating a bit of something you have saved on during lockdown. The nights out you have been unable to have for instance. The savings you have made on that coffee on your way into work. All our fund is spent solely on former Royal Scots and their dependants.

We are all absolutely devastated at the loss of our amazing wee Mum, having been diagnosed with terminal cancer only six weeks ago, she sadly passed away on Friday, we have no words to describe how we all feel, she will be very sorely missed! She was the best Mum, Granny and Great-Granny anyone could ask for. She is now with our Dad, her soulmate and love of her life who she missed so much. RIP Mum love you so much … also from Kevin (not on FB)

There is a War cemetary in our village in the Netherlands. We adopted the grave of a young soldier who died in a small village nearby, named Samuel Anderson from Dundee. He was 23 years old when he and others from the Royal Scots 8t Bn. died in a battle with the Germans. I would like to know more about L.Cpl.Samuel Anderson, but there is nothing on the Internet.

On the 8th September, 1943, there was an explosion in a goods siding at HEXHAM Railway Station, where ammunition was being unloaded from a lorry into a railway wagon. The lorry had blown up and set the wagon, which was full of ammunition, on fire.
Corporal Watson and Private Anderson, who were both on duty at the Station immediately ran to the scene on hearing the explosion. On arrival they heard cries for help coming from the burning wagon. They tried to enter the wagon from one side but were driven back by the flames. They went round to the other side and in turn entered the wagon at great risk and helped to get out two officers who had been seriously injured, one of whom was found to be dead. Both Corporal Watson and Private Anderson showed complete disregard for their own safety and behaved with resource and coolness.
Fusiliers McMichael and Chassels also volunteered to help at scene of the incident. They crept under the next door wagon and disconnected the burning one, thereby isolating the danger. Before this was done the wagon under which they were creeping was also on fire. These two men also showed a complete disregard for personal safety, and it is possible that their actions saved the lives of many troops and civilians in the neighbourhood.

Sadly I have to report the death on 28th March of Major Neil AD McCance a former Royal Scots officer. Neil would have been 91 in August this year.
I have no further details at this time.

As we enter week three of Covid 19 restrictions I want to update you all on Royal Scot matters.
It was marvellous to see the support shown to the NHS staff by the public during the hand clapping and Pipe playing over the last two Thursdays. I have a daughter who is a Doctor and a granddaughter who is a Nurse and they both tell me how proud they are to be doing what they do.
MUSEUM. The Museum of course remains closed however thanks to modern technology it can still be visited online. Someone recently asked about leaving their Grandfathers medals and other items to the museum in their will. This and many other questions will be answered when we return to normal working. Also, on Facebook Tom Gordon and Cathy Tucker have been putting up items of interest, just to keep the Museum ‘live’.
CLUB. The Club remains closed and is losing a lot of revenue due to the cancellation of bookings for accommodation and events. The announcement that this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo had been cancelled was a big hit for the club. We must spare a thought also for those whose weddings were to take place in the club.
ASSOCIATION. Although members are unable to get together at events it is clear that a lot of associating is taking place online and the social media sites are buzzing.

Regimental Day. Although we could not get together on the night, we showed that as a Regiment we are still one and many posts on Facebook of Royals raising a glass at 1830 on 28/03/2020 showed that.
BENEVOLENCE. The number of requests for assistance has neither increased nor decreased and there has only been one case indirectly linked to Covid 19. This situation is anticipated to change in the coming weeks. Cases involving home alterations, ie wet rooms and stairlifts will not be able to be fully processed as tradesmen will not be able to carry out the work required. This should not however prevent anyone from submitting those type of claims it just means the work will be delayed.
Post Covid 19 Event. It might be a good idea to have a “Reunite” function of some sort when this is all over. The Regimental Reunion could be held later in the year, perhaps based on a similar format to the highly successful Op BANNER night.
It is with our deepest sympathy that we have to inform you of the passing of John McGrath RS (MID), John is Uncle to Ms Cathy Busby (RSA NI Branch), Cathys father Patrick james and his brother William McGrath both also served as RS soldiers, Unfortunately John fell ill to the covid 19 virus and passed away in Glasgow on the 3rd Apr 2020, on behalf of all members of the NI branch our thoughts and condolences are with Cathy and the wider family circle

The names written inside are Private Thomas Wilson and Son Robert Hendog Wilson 1942-1988

10362 Cpl T Wilson DCM
10362 Thomas Wilson enlisted: 09.09.08 discharged 04.04.1919. He served with the 1st Battalion although he may have been with the 2nd at some point. I can’t confirm that at the moment. He was discharged as a Silver War Badge Man, aged 29. He embarked for France in Dec 1915, thus he served throughout the War. He was awarded the D.C.M in 1915. He obtained the Rank if Cpl. His campaign medals were the 1915 Star, War and Defence Medal. There may be a photo of him in the collection but all material covering this period are with Max Communications currently being digitised under Libor.

Further to my post on 12th March and now that the situation is clearer, I wish to update you all on the following:
REGIMENTAL OFFICE. With effect from Friday 20th March Ellie and I will be working from home apart from a couple of short visits to the office each week to deal with post and banking. We will use the e-mail addresses as are currently in use, that is admin@theroyalscots.co.uk and jimmy.springthorpe@theroyalscots.co.uk.
A message on the office answer machine (0131 557 0405) will direct callers to my mobile phone which will be manned during the hours 8am to 2pm. Outside of those hours you can leave a message and your call will be returned as soon as is possible.

THE REGIMENTAL ASSOCIATION. All association/regimental events including those organised by branches are cancelled up until the 1st of July when the situation will be reviewed. This includes the branch monthly meetings and all open-air events. Anyone who has paid for the Regimental Day dinner and/or the Regimental reunion will be refunded.
REGIMENTAL BENEVOLENCE. Benevolence will function as normal and I ask you all if you identify anyone in need please direct them to their nearest branch of SSAFA who are responsible for initiating the case. It is likely that the SSAFA case worker will do the interview over the telephone rather than face to face.
