Remembrance Events 2020

In News by Jim Anderson2 Comments

Good Morning,

I hope this finds you all well in these difficult times. We have been following Scottish Government guidance closely and I thought I would share the guidance notes I have sent out to all of our branches with regards to planning remembrance events this year. I also attach guidance from Scottish Government with regards to remembrance. We all have to be very careful in the current circumstances we find ourselves in and must do our best to keep our members and the general public safe.

The opening ceremonies on 26 Oct 20 for the Edinburgh Gardens and 27 Oct 20 for Glasgow Gardens of remembrance will go ahead this year, however in a much reduced format – there will be no more than 6 wreath layers at each event. Legion Scotland respectfully request that our membership, other Associations and Organisations do not attend these events this year, in the event that large gatherings occur at any of the events Legion Scotland will have to take the decision to cancel at very short notice and not proceed with the event .

A very small team of volunteers from Legion Scotland will happily lay wreaths on behalf of any other Associations or organisations directly after the opening ceremony, if they would like us to. In the event that Associations and Organisations would like to lay wreaths in person then each of the gardens will be open for them to do so after 1230 on the day of each of them opening.

Remembrance Sunday on the 08 November 2020 in Edinburgh will again be a very much reduced size event with only 22 wreath Layers in attendance. The plan at the moment still TBC from HES is for a remembrance service to take place at the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle this event will be closed to the public for safety reasons. As with previous events a small team of Legion Scotland Volunteers will lay wreaths at the stone of remembrance on behalf of Associations and organisations Legion Scotland we respectfully request that our members and other Associations and Organisations do not Attend in the interest of public safety .

Armistice day 11th November 2020 Edinburgh Gardens, this very small service will still go ahead there will be three wreath layers and again we respectfully request that our members and other Associations and organisations do not attend.

There will be further guidance and potentially restrictions imposed by the Government in the run up to all of these events, all of the guidance listed is correct at the time of it being sent out but I am sure you all realise that there will be further changes between now and the events happening and I will send out information to you all as soon as I can after receipt of it

The information I am sending out is for your situational awareness and I hope everyone can commemorate remembrance in a safe manner whilst keeping to the guidelines given out by Scottish Government. If anyone has any questions with regards to any of the information I have sent out please give me a call or get in touch.

Best wishes

Do you know what the plans are for the Haymarket and High Street Parades. Also the Gate at Glencorse.
I know that the BL have meetings with the council on these. But with circumstances on going all the council teams are mostly working from home.
