  1. OBITUARY

    MAJOR CHARLES JOHN RICHARD ERRINGTON

    12 August 1918 – 29 August 2022

A Pre-War Regular Officer who evaded a German massacre in 1940, survived five years as a Prisoner Of War (POW) and narrowly avoided the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 1946.

Major Charles John Richard Errington, always known as John, who has died aged 104. was the oldest surviving veteran of The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment). Along with that achievement he was the last surviving officer commissioned into the Regiment (and possibly the British Army) before the Second World War. He was the last survivor of the epic stand by the Regiment’s 1st Battalion (1RS), along with 2nd Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment at Le Paradis holding part of the outer perimeter of the Dunkirk bridgehead. Their action, delaying the main German thrust over the three critical days of 27-30 May 1940, and fighting until the last round, assisted the bulk of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) to slip behind them to escape from the harbour and beaches back to England, over 100 of those who survived the Battle, including many wounded, were subsequently massacred by troops of the German SS Division Totenkopf – a fact which only emerged towards the end of the War and has never been fully investigated.

  5. THE ROYAL SCOTS AT DALKEITH PALACE REMEMBRANCE 2022 EVENT

Team RS373 took the decision at their last meeting on 25th August to delay this important innovative event until 7- 10 November 2023. Much preparatory planning and coordination has already taken place, but some important matters were taking longer than expected. As opposed to a one- off event the intention is to build on the experience and hold similar Remembrance events in 2024 and 2025 to enhance public awareness of the First of Foot’s unique heritage.

The purpose of the event is to engage with and reach out to the wide spectrum of the intergenerational community of Midlothian, which is in the heart of The Royal Scots former recruiting area, to reinforce the importance of Remembrance in the contemporary world and increase awareness of The Royal Scots close connections over the centuries with Dalkeith Palace and the local area through interactive exhibits and activities in a societal way, with a focus on human stories eg the experiences of Royal Scots from the local area from World War 1 through World War 2 to Post 1945 to 2006 and up to the present day.

  9. Hello fellow Royal Scots veterans.

I received this email from the secretary/ treasurer of Who Dares Cares. If anyone would like to take part and raise money for this well worthy cause, please read and get in touch.

The Royal Scots association would also benefit.

    Hello George,

    I hope you’re keeping well.

Calum MacLeod has asked me to email you regarding the Edinburgh Kiltwalk.

The aim would be to get as many Royal Scots Cap badged Veterans to take part on the Big Stroll walk (14.6 miles) through the city of Edinburgh for Who Dares Cares.

Each Veteran would be asked to raise the minimum of £100.00 for Who Dares Cares on their Kiltwalk Just Giving Page and the Royal Scots Association would receive 25% profit after the event from Who Dares Cares. Every single penny raised, will be topped up by a HUGE 50%* thanks to the generosity of Sir Tom Hunter and The Hunter Foundation. This means if a Veteran raises £100 for Who Dares Cares, we’ll receive £150 and the profit to the Royal Scots Association will increase.

Who Dares Cares will pay for all registration fees and each Veteran will receive a Who Dares Cares Kiltwalk t-shirt after they’ve raised £25.00 on their Kiltwalk Just Giving Page.

All we ask is that the event is promoted on all official Royal Scots Association social media platforms and that it is sent out to all Association members by email. Who Dares Cares will take care of all other administration matters.

Veterans can visit our website to start the registration process below, once applications are received the promotional codes will be ordered and sent directly to participates with further instructions on setting up their Kiltwalk Just Giving page.
