  1. 23 AUGUST

On 23 August 1918 Private Hugh McIver MM, whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion on the Western Front near Courcelles-le-Comte, near Arras, northern France, displayed conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in single-handedly capturing an enemy machine-gun position thus enabling the company to advance unchecked. For his gallantry Private McIver was awarded the Victoria Cross.

    1. I happened to be in the company of some Old Royals last evening, in the course of which the annual Nagpore Dinner was referred to with anticipation. I have already bought two tickets.

We all know that Nagpore is a battle honour unique to our Regiment because the 2nd Battalion was the sole British Army battalion to participate. The other Regiments of the Crown were Indian, some of whom likewise were awarded the battle honour.

What may be less well known is that the Battle was fought, at Nagpore in central India, in 1817 in the course of the Mahratta Wars. 2 RS had marched 230 miles in twelve days to be involved in two actions. In the first of these, 75 guns and 50 elephants were captured. While the bulk of 2 RS continued to lay siege to Nagpore, the flank companies formed part of a force that routed other rebels at Meheidpoor. The battle honours Nagpore and Meheidpoor were both carried on the Regimental Colour.

  7. REGIMENTAL BAND LUNCH

We’re now on the short countdown to the first Regimental Band reunion since before Covid, which in itself is something to celebrate.

We will gather in the Main Lounge of the RS Club at 1215 on Saturday 30th September, for lunch in the Douglas Room at 1300.

The proforma with all relevant details has been issued and returns are coming in. Many thanks to those who have submitted returns to date. Those who have not yet done so, are requested to do so by 25th August so that arrangements can be finalised.

Any Band members who have not yet registered interest in attending can do so by either contacting me at wjblythe@hotmail.com or by going to the Upcoming Events page where the proforma can be downloaded. There are still some seats at the table!

  8. THE ROYALS SCOTS MUSEUM REMEMBRANCE WEEK EXHIBITION AT DALKEITH PALACE 4 – 8 NOVEMBER 2023

THE EXHIBITION The Royal Scots Museum will hold a temporary exhibition at Dalkeith Palace during Remembrance Week 4 – 8 November. Its aim is to illustrate the importance of Remembrance, especially of Royal Scots fallen, concentrating on the period from the Boer War right up to 2006. The exhibition will also cover the role of Dalkeith Palace in two World Wars and refers to the Lord Henry Scott who served in the 3rd Militia Battalion The Royal Scots during the Boer War and was a founding father of The Royal Scots War Memorial Club. Partners in the exhibition also include the Dalkeith Museum, The Royal Scots Club, Poppyscotland, Royal Scots historical re-enactors, National Records Scotland and others. The target audience includes the good folk of Dalkeith, Midlothian and beyond. Organised visits by local schools are also scheduled. The exhibition will be followed by our annual Royal Scots Remembrance events at the Glencorse Memorial Gates, the Regimental Monument in Princes Street Gardens and others throughout the Regimental area.

PONTIUS PILATES BODYGUARD VOLUNTEERS In order to ensure success, we are assembling a body of Pontius Pilates Bodyguard Volunteers to act as guides – and we need a few more. Although it would be ideal for all PPBG Volunteers to be available for the whole period, a day or two here and there would be equally welcome. This request is directed especially at Old Royals, most having served in the Regiment from the 1960s onwards and who will be familiar with much of the subject matter from personal experience.

Anyone interested should drop me an email to wjblythe@hotmail.com, without commitment, for further information.
